Pipsico Fossil Hunt Photos by: Richard Jacquot My trip to Pipsico was fun as always. I wish I could have stayed longer, but I still managed to find a few goodies on Friday. I have never had a bad collecting trip at Pipsico. The site is unique with its variety of fossils and always throws out a surprise. Ready to hit the road! As soon as I arrived, I headed down the beach to the cypress grove. The walk down and back turned up a few neat finds. This stump was looking at me... I noticed a lot of rocks and fossils looking at me this trip. My favorite cluster of cypress stumps. The cypress area is a great place for bones and ecphora shells. This thing was looking at me too... My only people picture. MAGMA members Chelle and Carla hunting the beach Friday. Cloudy, cool weather. I didn't bring my trailer this time. Every time I come home, I have a huge pile of driftwood. My basement is lined with the stuff. I figured if I left the trailer home, no driftwood. Well, maybe this little piece. A worn whale vert trapped in a matrix of shells and limestone. You have to be at Pipsico collector level 10 to recognize one of these on the beach. A very worn, very ugly Ecphora shell. I collected its twin a couple of years ago. I found this large section of a whale vert Friday afternoon. I am hoping someone found the other half. It is a fresh break showing on one side. Stack of fossil scallops. Fossil whale inner ear bone. Another vert. Fossil scallop, both sides in tact. A lot of these were washed out of the banks and in the surf this trip. This water worn coral was looking at me as well. I must have had food stuck on my face? My favorite whale vert. This one washed up at low tide. Fossil scallop on a matrix of shells, coral and barnacles. Fossil barnacle cluster. These oyster clusters are unappreciated. They also glow under a UV light. I did not get to see what others collected. If you found something cool, send me some pictures and I will add to this report. See you in June! |
